[English] Grammar Study - 과거형 진행형과 과거형의 차이 (I was doing / I did - past continuous & simple past)

과거형 (simple past)

(과거에) ~했다.

  We played
(completed action)
 
Start   Finish

 

  • 단순 과거형은 과거에 어떤 일이 일어났다가 끝난, 전체 기간의 사건을 의미한다.
    ex_"What did you do yesterday morning?"  "We played tennis." (from 10:00 to 11:30)

ex_Jack read a book yesterday. (= for beginning to end)

      Did you watch the game on TV last night?

      It didn't rain while we were on vacation.

 

 

과거진행형 (past continuous)

(과거에) ~하고 있었다.

We were playing
(unfinished action)
We were playing
(unfinished action)
We were playing
(unfinished action)
Start   Finish

 

  • 과거진행형은 과거에 어떤 일이 일어나고있던 도중, 특정 시점에 진행되고 있었던 일을 표현한다.
    ex_"What were you doing at 10:30?"  "We were playing tennis."

ex_Jack was reading a book when his phone rang.
      Were you watching TV when I called you?

      It wasn't raining when I got up.

 

 

 

ex_I stared work at 9:00 and finished at 4:30. At 2:30 I was working.

      It was raining when we went out. (= It started raining before we went out)

      I saw Emily and Sam this morning. They were waiting at the bus stop.

      Grace fell asleep while she was reading.

 

 

 


과거형과 과거진행형의 차이를 정리했다. 과거와 현재, 미래까지 포괄적으로 다루는 현재형 / 현재진행형에 비해 의미와 시점이 과거에 한정되어있다.

 

과거에 일어났다 끝난 어떤 사건 전체를 언급할 때는 단순 과거형으로, 그 사건 과정 안에서 특정 시점에 진행중이던 일을 언급할 때는 과거진행형을 사용한다고 보면 될 거 같다. 그 일을 진행하고만 있었다면 그 기간 안에서 어떤 시점이든 과거진행형으로 표현 가능하다.
